Biography
Simone Fattal was born in Syria and grew up in Lebanon. She first studied Philosophy at the École supérieure des lettres in Beirut, and later at the Sorbonne in Paris. In 1969, she returned to Beirut and started painting, and participated in numerous exhibitions.
In 1980, having fled the Lebanese Civil War, Fattal settled in California with her partner, Etel Adnan, and founded the Post-Apollo Press, a publishing house dedicated to innovative and experimental literary work. In 1988, Fattal returned to artistic practice by making ceramic sculptures after enrolling at the Art Institute of San Francisco. In 2013, she released a film, “Autoportrait”, which has since been shown worldwide in many film festivals.
“Works and Days”, a retrospective at the MoMA PS1 of New York in 2019, brought together nearly 200 artworks produced by Simone Fattal over 50 years, highlighting the richness of her work.
